Leah Minnick retires after 35 years | The Seminole Tribune

By Rachel Buxton

BRIGHTON ? After 35 years of dedicated work with the Seminole Tribe, Brighton?s Director of Elder Services Leah Minnick retired on Feb. 24.

Family, friends and community members came together to honor and congratulate Minnick during a retirement party held at the Senior Center on March 1.

?I didn?t want nothing,? Minnick said. ?I told them I just want to walk out that door quietly.?

However, her staff and her elders were not going to let that happen.

Minnick began working for the Seminole Tribe and the department, called Hot Meals at the time, on Nov. 17, 1976.

?I had been working outside in Okeechobee, raising my kids there, and somebody told me there was a job open if I wanted to come work for the Tribe,? she said. ?It was with the clinic. So I applied for it.?

She traveled all the way to Hollywood to interview for the position. Although she didn?t land the position she originally wanted, as she was leaving her interview, then director of Hot Meals Lottie Herald chased her down and offered her a job on the spot as an assistant cook for Hot Meals.

?She came running after me when I was fixing to leave and said, ?Leah, I was hoping they wouldn?t give you the job because I got a job for you at the Hot Meals and, if you want it, you can start right away.? I said OK, and I?ve been there ever since,? Minnick said.

After four years of promotions within the department, Minnick became the director.

She said at that time, Hot Meals mainly fed the elders. During her 35 years, she slowly added programs and events to the department.

?Time changed, things changed,? she said.

As director, Minnick organized trips, bowling and horseshoe tournaments, holiday parties and anything else that added fun and adventure to the Department of Elder Services.

Minnick loved making it possible for the elders to experience things off the reservation and to see things they didn?t know existed. Minnick said their trip to Alaska stands out above the others.

?That was the best trip ever,? she said. ?Happy Jones went on that trip to Alaska and just couldn?t get over some of the things she saw.?

Time quickly passed, and, before Minnick knew it, she had spent her entire career at the Department of Elder Services.

?It got to the point where my oldest daughter said, ?Mom, when are you going to retire? I don?t want to come in there when you?re still the director,?? Minnick laughed. ?She turns 55 in August, so I got out just in time.?

Minnick said she?s going to miss her staff and planning activities, but she?s looking forward to just being a senior. Thanks to Minnick?s hard work and persistence in getting the new Senior Center in Brighton, she will get to fully enjoy it.

She admitted that she?s still adjusting to retirement, but she has plenty to keep her busy, including straightening up her house and taking care of her cows.

Minnick also plans to take up sewing. Her mother was a seamstress and said she never learned to sew because she was busy working and raising her kids. Now that she will have the time, she would like to finally learn.

?It?s never too late,? she said.

While Minnick never thought she would spend her entire career in one place, she said things happen for a reason and that she must have been meant for the Senior Center.

She only has one regret.

?I should have kept a journal because I could have wrote a book?it would have been funny,? Minnick laughed. ?I had a lot of fun.?

The farther the better for corals after oil spill

Deepwater organisms may be slow to recover from Gulf accident

Web edition : Monday, March 26th, 2012

Deepwater corals didn?t escape the ecological damage of the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. How much they were hurt depended on how close to the spill?s source they were.

Six months after the spill, marine scientists sent deep-diving submersibles down 290 to 2,600 meters to check out the damage at the bottom of the Gulf. At several sites more than 20 kilometers away from the ruptured wellhead, deepwater corals such as Paramuricea apparently continued to thrive. But just 11 kilometers from the spill, similar corals had lost tissue and were covered in places with a brown flocculent material.

Chemical analysis of that ?floc? linked it to the chemical composition of oil spewing from the wellhead, suggesting the material in some way forms after exposure to oil. Because deepwater corals live so long and grow at a biologically glacial pace, it could be years before the full effect of the oil spill on deepwater corals is known, scientists say.

Helen White, a geochemist at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and her colleagues report the finding online the week of March 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Entrepreneurial Articles: Customer Service-

Customer Service - A Study in Contrasts

March 22, 2012
By Jerry Osteryoung

"There is a spiritual aspect to our lives - when we give, we receive - when a business does something good for somebody, that somebody feels good about them!" ~ Ben Cohen, Ben & Jerry's

Some businesses really get the importance of customer service and others just do not. In many cases, those that do not get it compete on price alone, knowing that price is all their customers really want. However, this type of business strategy does nothing to ensure loyalty or repeat business. In my opinion, business owners who do not provide great customer service either do not see its value, do not have the funds to support it or are simply missing its profit potential.

Two of my recent encounters with businesses demonstrate the polar extremes of customer service. On one end of the spectrum is a restaurant I visited in Hollywood, Florida. I was in Hollywood to deliver a speech, and some clients and I went to this restaurant when we broke for lunch.

When we walked into the restaurant, there was no one in the entire place - no customers, not even staff! After waiting for a short while - not really sure why we waited at all - an elderly man came out, walked up to the table and said, "What do you want!"

The greeting - if you can call it that - was completely devoid of any welcome or friendliness, and the lunch service got worse from there. We had to ask for menus, silverware and salt. I even had to walk into the back of the restaurant to find him and ask for our check, which he delivered five minutes later.

The quality of service at this restaurant was so bad that, if I had not experienced it myself, I probably would not believe it possible. Needless to say, we will not be going back to this restaurant. Ever.

I just can not imagine why anyone would allow a business to be operated like this unless it was an anomaly. But in the case of this restaurant, it was not just an off day. After talking with some other folks who had been there before - something I probably should have done first - I discovered this horrible customer service is standard for that place.

In stark contrast, my experiences at So Pure Salon in Tallahassee are always amazing, from the moment I walk in to the moment I walk out.

When I walk into the salon, I am always immediately greeted with a warm smile and offered something to drink. My stylist, Christine, is excellent. She goes out of her way to make me feel special, whether it is by giving me a short scalp massage while washing my hair or being sincerely concerned that I am happy with my hair.

When she is finished with my hair, she walks me to the front desk - these little gestures make such a difference - where she gets them to schedule my next appointment. Three days before the appointment, they always text and call to remind me.

Another special thing about Christine is that whenever I talk to her about her customers, she never refers to them as "customers" but calls them "guests" and is always very respectful.

These extra special touches permeate the entire experience at this salon. For example, when I buy hair products, the cashier/greeter rings me up and puts the product(s) in a bag, but instead of handing me the package over the counter, she walks around the counter to hand me the bag. It is such a nice touch.

Given these accounts, it should not surprise you that So Pure Salon just doubled in size and the restaurant will not likely last another year.

While these two examples are extremes, they clearly illustrate how a business that puts tremendous emphasis on customer service flourishes and one that does not languishes.

Now go out and make sure that customer service is always at the top of your mind. Your business will be much more successful if you do.

You can do this!

An extinct species of scops owl has been discovered in Madeira

Friday, March 23, 2012

An international team of scientists, including some from Majorca and the Canary Islands, have described a new type of fossil scops owl, the first extinct bird on the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). Otus mauli, which was also the first nocturnal bird of prey described in the area, lived on land and became extinct as a result of humans arriving on the island.

Twenty years ago, the German researcher Harald Pieper discovered fossil remains of a small nocturnal bird of prey in Madeira, which, until now, had not been studied in depth. The international team of palaeontologists has shown that the remains belong to a previously unknown extinct species of scops owl, which they have called Otus mauli.

"It has long legs and wings slightly shorter than the continental European scops owl from which it derives" Josep Antoni Alcover, one of the authors of the study and researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a mixed centre of the university of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The result of the analysis of the proportions of the remains found, which has been published in the journal Zootaxa, reveals that Otus mauli could be a land inhabiting species that ate invertebrates and "occasionally lizards or birds".

"It is likely that their extinction is linked to the arrival of humans and the fauna they brought with them", Alcover explains. He also points out that their disappearance formed part of a pattern of extinction of the island's species, which occurred in virtually all the islands of the world.

According to researchers, amongst the causes of extinction of this scops owl, the destruction of its habitat is highlighted, as Madeira had a lot of serious fires during the seven years that followed the Portuguese arrival. Furthermore, humans brought new birds with diseases that were unfamiliar to the native species, as well as rats and mice that could prey on eggs of animals that had nests close to the ground.

Exclusive to Madeira?

The same or a similar species has been investigated in Porto Santo, another island of the archipelago of Madeira. "This is extremely interesting" the researcher says, "but difficult to assess because the materials found are limited and fragmented".

"If the scops owls of Madeira and Porto Santo were different species, it would mean that the Otus' flying ability is much more limited than continental scops owls. The distance between the two islands would be enough to isolate them" Alcover points out.

The homogeneity of the scops owls' measurements on the two islands, as well as the differences compared to European scops owls suggests that they were genetically isolated from the European populations. The distance between the continent and the island was enough to explain the difference in the species.

On this island they expect to discover new species of birds in the near future "which will report a world that disappeared just a few hundred years ago". "The same thing will happen in the Azores islands where there is already evidence that a scops owl different to the ones in Madeira and Europe that is also extinct" the scientist says.

I would liiiiiike an elven woman. :D Beast with a rapier on the outside, fairly batshit on the inside and when no one's looking. She's sorta based on the combination of two characters in Drakengarde series (awful game, decent concepts).
She has a... thing with children and the child-like.

Ah, further thoughts I ought to have mentioned---she doesn't have to be ONE WITH THE FORESTS GRR HUMANS GET OUT etc, etc.
I rather fancy the idea of having elves integrated into human/etc society, in the cities and whatnot. She seems the city girl.

That's delightfully vague, lol. Never played Drakenguard. Guess I'm not missing much? Go for it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. ^_^

And yay for non-generic forest elves! No one loves a hippie. </3
