Services Provided

Cheap Land focuses primarily on finding rural real estate and property for reasonable. When land is purchased for cheap, investors rarely lose, because the property only has a tendency to increase in value. Company is urged to buy land cheap, because the rentals are relatively easy to maintain, and the property taxes are typically low. In general, non-urban real estate prices are consequently low that the house can only increase in worth.

Cheap Land helps people buy property with no credit checks along with guaranteed seller financing. The company has been supplying this service for nearly 40 years. If you would like to buy terrain in a rural area, after that these professionals may help you.

The ?Law of Per-Acre Pricing?

Your ?Law of Per-Acre Pricing? is an important principle to understand for those that are searhing for to buy cheap outlying land. With this principle, the larger the tract involving area becomes after a purchase, the smaller the cost per acre charge will likely be. The smaller the region of land, the higher the per-acre charge becomes.

As an illustration, a 2000 acre residence may sell for $200 every acre. This property may be broken into Five-hundred acre tracts and offered for $400 per acre. These types of 500 acre properties may be sold into Fifty acre tracts and sold for $800 per acre.

Of these scenarios, the Five-hundred acre property will sell for a higher price per-acre cost than the 2000 acre residence. Experts recommend this course for accumulating success. However, it requires excellent business judgment and financial acumen.

Examples of Dealings

Example 1. You can find 640 acres of real estate for sale in Wyoming regarding $195 per acre. The entire lot may be purchased regarding $124,800 with $4,800 down and an equilibrium of $120,000 payable over 240 a few months at 9% interest. Your monthly assessment can be $1,080 per month, and there are no prepayment penalties. The property taxes on this house may be as low as $300 or less annually.

The actual land is pristine. Therefore, it will require much more investment if you desire to produce the land. In this state, the mineral rights are of the company, but the proprietor will be compensated when any oil wells were drilled.

Example 2. A 160 acre rentals are being sold for $248 for each acre in Wyoming. The whole price is $39,680 with $780 down and a balance associated with $38,900 payable with $389 per month. This would be amortized around 186 months with 9% attention. This is a private home that the general public cannot legally access without permission.

The property taxes on this property are just $95 annually. Experts predict mass inflation during the future, which would improve the value of the property. This is an extraordinary opportunity that clients would not want to pass way up. The property is currently zoned as agricultural. Any future oil drilling on the client?s property will result in compensation from the oil company.

How can an estate plan help me ? hot news

Do you know how your life will be divided after your death? Who will your estate go to Who will look after your children? With an estate plan you decide. You are in control of your family?s security in the event that something tragic should happen. Now perhaps you are a little foggy with some of the fundamental ideas associated with estate planning. Let?s start at the beginning. According to Merriam-Webster?s Dictionary of Law estate planning is: The arranging for the disposition and management of one?s estate at death through the use of wills, trusts, insurance policies, and other device

Your estate is everything you own, your assets and liabilities. This includes things such as your house, account in your name, your insurance policies, and vehicles. The problem with dying without an effective estate plan is that even if your property is distributed to the proper people, a process known as -?probate court-? may cost your heirs up to 10% of your assets net value. Also you must take any children that you are the legal guardian of into consideration. If you do not have an estate plan it may be probate court that decides who looks after them after them after you are gone. You don?t want to let this happen to you and your family. You need an estate plan. Now, in order to start estate planning you are going to need to look into the following options: living wills, revocable living trusts. A living will is a document in which you can spell out where all of your assets will be going. You may also modify this document at anytime. You are the one in control. This is a great way to avoid probate court. A living trust allows you to name a person who will handle all of your legal affairs after you pass away. Your trust may either be revocable or irrevocable. Revocable means that, just like a living will, you can modify it at any time. However, in an irrevocable living trust you do not have the ability to change it. Having an estate plan can help your family avoid many hardships after your passing. Don?t let your whole life fall into the wrong hands. Take control. Make an estate plan today. Need more? Estate Planning at http://www.my-estate-plan.com

Fight To Save 'Un-Islamic' Dogs Of Iran ? Pets. Safety. Education.

For years now the brave Iranian dissidents have been fighting?Ayatollahs? Islamic oppression.

Now there is one more way the regime is?suppressing?freedom of expression in Iran: It?s banning pet dogs!

?As part of police operations in Tehran, officers also issue warnings to dog owners walking their pets outside. In Sharia-ruled Iran, dogs are considered ?impure.? Dozens of dogs in Tehran were round up last month and placed in quarantine.?

First they came for the pet dogs?

I hope all the good dog owners out there are as outraged as I am.

I am actually thinking of starting a Facebook ?cause? page to fight for the release of the?innocent?dogs from ?quarantine?.

Now that I am thinking, what exactly are they in ?quarantine? from? Isn?t ?quarantine? is where they put all the dissidents?

(AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says the big trading loss at JPMorgan Chase shows the need for Congress to put more teeth into Wall Street reforms intended to prevent the practices that led to the 2008 financial meltdown.

The $2 billion loss has renewed calls by Democratic lawmakers for tougher rules on major financial institutions.

"Without Wall Street reform, we could have found ourselves with the taxpayers once again on the hook for Wall Street's mistakes," Obama said in his weekly media address Saturday. He added: "We've got to finish the job of implementing this reform and putting these rules in place."

Obama promoted rules that would require big banks or financial institutions to have more cash on hand to cover losses and that would take away big bonuses and paydays from failed CEOs.

The president said financial institutions that "aren't cheating customers or making risky bets that could damage the whole economy" have nothing to fear from reforms.

"Yes, it discourages big banks and financial institutions from making risky bets with taxpayer-insured money. And it encourages them to do things that actually help the economy ? like extending loans to entrepreneurs with good ideas, to middle-class families who want to buy a home, to students who want to pursue higher education," he said.

One focus of the financial oversight overhaul is a provision that restricts banks' ability to trade for their own profit, a practice known as proprietary trading. It is named for Paul Volcker, a former Federal Reserve chairman. But a draft of the rule has failed to satisfy either banks, which says it would disrupt some of their core functions, or advocates of stronger regulation who say it would have prevented JPMorgan's loss.

In the Republican's weekly address, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson faulted what he called a "do-nothing Senate" under Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada for the frustrations he said he has felt in his 16 months in Congress.

Noting that the Senate hasn't passed a budget in three years, Johnson said House Republicans have fulfilled their responsibilities by passing a budget but that Senate Democrats have not fulfilled theirs.

This past week, the Senate rejected by a 99-0 vote a budget that Republicans offered up based on an Obama proposal in February. Four other budget plans also were voted down.

How a Chauffeur Driven Limousine Can Help You?

Limousines depict luxury and class. They have been a symbol of status since a long time. It has always been the nature of humans to be treated exclusively. Traveling in luxury transportation has always been a dream of everybody. Limousines are the special cars that are designed for ultra luxury and comfort. They are hired by people for different purposes. The most common occasions and events that are managed with limousines include parties, friends & family gatherings, business travels, airport limo transfers, weddings, promenades, night out at the town, sporting events and many more.

Many people who are traveling internationally for business or personal reasons prefer arranging a meet and greet facility in order to avoid any kind of inconvenience at the airport. They prefer to book a private care in advance so that they don?t need to worry about roads and directions in order to reach their destination especially if they are new to that country or city.

Hiring a chauffeur driven airport limousine frees them from the worries of getting to their destination safely in time. If an airport limousine is hired in advance, a courteous chauffeur will be at their airport to welcome you and help you with your luggage through to the hotel or your destination. The individuals who are budget concerned can opt for hourly limo packages that are especially designed to fit everyone?s budget.

Businessmen who travel from country to country or city, hire chauffeur driven limousines for fulfilling their travel requirements while maintaining a good impression on their clients or competitors. They hire special corporate limo rental services from corporate limo companies. The corporate limo companies offer special packages that are designed to suit the needs of their corporate clients especially the businessmen. They know how to choose the right driver and the right car vehicle for your corporate event. The businessmen usually hire corporate limousines for conducting various corporate events on the go. These events include road shows, business conferences, and business meetings or just about anything related to business.

Couples love to get married with class and style. Aside from the beautiful wedding gown and a tuxedo, there are many other things that are a desire of every couple on their special day. Hiring a luxury car for traveling from home to the place of event is considered as one of the vital tasks during a marriage. For arriving and departing from the special event in style, couples usually hire chauffeur driven stretched limousines. The best thing about stretched limousines is that they have enough space to accommodate as much as ten passengers. They can also bring their close friends and loved ones in a stretched limousine.

Aside from marriages and business events, limousines are also utilized by students or groups of friends for spending a night or a day out together. If you are a group of more than ten people then hiring a stretched sedan limousine will not be advisable. Stretch SUV hire is advisable for a group of people who wish to travel together in luxury and with style. The stretched SUV limousines include Hummer H2 Stretch and Escalade ESV Stretch as the most popular SUV limos with the capacity to accommodate up to 20 passengers easily and comfortably. Bridge limousine is one of the leading online limousine hire company of the US having a large fleet of vehicles featuring all the latest models of limos like sedans, SUVs, stretches, vans and buses.

Worms are BACK! Worms Revolution announcedVideo Game News ...

Team17 has announced that their next installment in the Worms series will be released Q3 2012, Worms Revolution. This latest installment will include dynamic water elements and physics objects. Dynamic water in the game will present unique situations for the players, many being hazardous to the player. For instance if the player blows away the landscape and there is water under that land it will react dynamically and flow out rapidly and effect the other worms on the map. So yes worms can be swept right off the maps if you are not careful where you shoot, but it could work in your favor to destroy multiple enemy worms. To go with the dynamic water there are new physics involved with the objects on each map. The player can interact with these certain objects and depending on the reaction it can either benefit or hurt the player.

Here are some screenshots to sort of demonstrate the dynamic water and the physics for the objects.

'Idol' reveals its 2 finalists after shocking cut

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez are the finalists of season 11 of "American Idol"

The judges are going to have to find themselves a new favorite to promote in the ?American Idol? finale.

Joshua Ledet, who set the unofficial record for Most Standing Ovations From the Judges with his consistently big performances this season, was voted off the show on Thursday. He finished in third place, while Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez move on to compete for the title next week.

If he likes, Joshua can blame mentor Jimmy Iovine, who said that in hindsight, he wished he?d picked something that offered more of a melody than Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" for the teenager to perform Wednesday. He also regretted his pick for Jessica, thus shattering the ?Idol? record of self-critical comments in one night. (He?ll need a remedial course of ?Idol 201: The Art of Never Admitting Mistakes? if he wants to come back next season.) And they were more than empty words -- Jimmy seemed genuinely upset with himself when the results were announced, perhaps wondering if a better pick on his part would have been a game-changer.

Joshua could also blame a backlash or overconfidence stemming from the judges? fervent support of him over the past month, though that sure hadn?t hurt him over the previous few weeks. But really, he can probably blame his growling most of all. In a final three as close as this one appears to be, any little mistake hurts, and his over-the-top crashing about the stage on his final song didn?t do much to win the tender loving care of the audience. When in doubt, he tends to shout, and ultimately, it looks like the viewers plugged up their ears instead of picking up the phones for him.

That sets up the Phillip-Jessica finale, or Dave Matthews 2.0 vs. The Oldest-Sounding Teenager in America. But the big question next week won?t just concern who?s going to win. We'll also find out whether Ford will give Phillip a car like it normally does for the two finalists, despite the fact that he?s been absent from the video shoots. Is he secretly in league with the Japanese auto companies? And what are they going to do for that Ford video shoot next week? Have Jessica sing by herself? (Remember: Phillip has a doctor's note to skip filming those!)

Joshua can also take solace in the fact that he wasn?t the worst performer to take the stage this week. That would go to a lip-synching Lisa Marie Presley, who dragged herself onto the ?Idol? stage for the first time. She was part of a gothic set that had her both looking and sounding like something undead. Somewhere up there, Elvis is probably shaking his head and wondering whether she?s studied tapes of him performing. He?s also probably thinking that if he were alive, he?d make one heck of an ?Idol? judge.

But for now, it's the viewers who have spoken, and it?ll be a former pawn-shop worker or a California teenager who gets the confetti and the million-dollar deal on Wednesday.

Are you surprised that Joshua was cut? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!?Plus, join writer Craig Berman at 12:30 PT/3:30 ET on finale day, May 23, to chat about the final performances and who you think will win.?Sign up for a reminder!

Higher pain tolerance in athletes may hold clues for pain management

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Stories of athletes bravely "playing through the pain" are relatively common and support the widespread belief that they experience pain differently than non-athletes. Yet, the scientific data on pain perception in athletes has been inconsistent, and sometimes contradictory. Investigators from the University of Heidelberg have conducted a meta-analysis of available research and find that in fact, athletes can indeed tolerate a higher level of pain than normally active people. However, pain threshold, the minimum intensity at which a stimulus is perceived as painful, did not differ in athletes and normal controls. Their findings are published in the June issue of Pain?.

"Our analysis reveals that pain perception differs in athletes compared to normally active controls," says lead investigator Jonas Tesarz, MD. "Studies in athletes offer the opportunity for an evaluation of the physical and psychological effects of regular activity on pain perception, which might foster the development of effective types of exercise for relief in pain patients."

Researchers reviewed fifteen studies that evaluated experimentally induced pain threshold or tolerance in athletes compared to normally active controls. 568 athletes and 331 normally active controls were included. Eight of the studies were conducted in the USA, two in Canada, one in Australia, and four were conducted in Europe. The studies, which included both men and women, evaluated endurance sports, game sports, and strength sports. Twelve studies reported on pain tolerance, and nine studies examined pain threshold.

Athletes were found to have consistently higher pain tolerance in comparison to normally active adults. The magnitude of pain that athletes could withstand varied depending upon the type of sport in which they participate. For example, endurance athletes had a moderate tolerance for pain and their scores were fairly uniform. Athletes involved in game sports had a higher tolerance for pain than other athletes, but the results varied widely, suggesting that endurance athletes are more alike in their physical and psychological profiles, while athletes involved in game sports are more diverse.

The finding that regular exercise is clearly associated with higher pain tolerance, but pain thresholds are affected more ambiguously, likely has clinical implications, according to Dr. Tesarz. "Numerous studies of the effect of physical exercise in pain patients demonstrate a consistent impact on quality of life and functioning without an improvement in pain scores. It may be advisable in exercise treatment for pain patients to focus on the development of their pain-coping skills that would affect tolerance, rather than the direct alleviation of pain threshold," he notes.

"Further research is needed to clarify the exact relationship between physical activity and modifications in pain perception, and to identify the involved psychological factors and neurobiological processes. However, the observation that pain perception is modifiable by physical activity provides promise for the use of non-invasive methods with few side effects for patients with chronic pain conditions," concludes Dr. Tesarz.

Synopsis:

Finally, an organizational book for women who have given up trying to be Martha Stewart but still desire some semblance of order in their lives.

Most organizational books are written by and for people who are naturally structured and orderly. For the woman who is more ADD than type A, the advice sounds terrific but seldom works. These women are looking for help that takes into account their free-spirited outlook while providing tips and tricks they can easily follow to live a more organized life.

Kathi Lipp, author of?The Husband Project?and other ?project? books, is just the author to address this need. In her inimitable style, she offers

  • easy and effective ways women can restore peace to their everyday lives
  • simple and manageable long-term solutions for organizing any room in one?s home (and keeping it that way)
  • a realistic way to de-stress a busy schedule
  • strategies for efficient shopping, meal preparation, cleaning, and more

Full of helpful tips and abundant good humor,?The Get Yourself Organized Project?is for those who want to spend their time living and enjoying life rather than organizing their sock drawer.

Thoughts:?

Kathi Lipp has created a great system for organizing your life that includes only three boxes and two bags. The Get Organized Project isn't for those OCD readers who need everything to have it's place and everything to be in that place before they ever start. It's for women on the go that want more time for family than they do for laundry. These practical tips aren't given in a manner that makes the reader feel like they are doing a horrible job with their home. They are shared with humor and understanding. Kathi Lipp's latest "project" book is an inspiration for those people who couldn't find their head if it wasn't attached!

I love Kathi Lipp's books! She is so personable and easy to identify with. Her tips are easy to read and to try in the readers own home. She makes organizing the kitchen a fun project instead of a tedious experience that has women pulling their hair out. I am not a very organized person. To some extent, I know where things are, but I have a lot of room for improvement. I wouldn't call myself a hoarder (except where books are concerned) but perhaps a pack rat is a better term. I need help! LOL and this book may just be a lifesaver for my home.?

Armed with just three boxes and two bags readers can have each area of their homes under some semblance of control in no time. Lipp's process is easy to follow and informative. Readers divide their homes into areas and not necessarily rooms. Lipp suggests that readers use a timer and fifteen minutes to sort and organize that area or space. Each box and bag is used for sorting. The first box is for things that belong in other rooms. The second box is for things that need to be put back in a proper place within that room or area. The third box is for giveaway items. The first bag is for trash the second for recyclable items. It's just that simple! With the fifteen minute time limit organizers won't get overwhelmed and the boxes and bags allow them time to figure out what to do with things. I thought it was a great plan and can't wait to get started.

There are generally five steps to Kathi's plan:

1. Your Plan of Attack
2. Sort It Out
3. Clean It Up
4. Label It and Put It Away
5. Keep It Up

This isn't rocket science! If I can do it, you can do it... I think a lot of times disorganization has to do with time constraints. Women think they can't organize because that takes time from other things that they feel are more important. I think this book addresses that and shows women how to be more organized without sacrificing the things that are more important to them. In each room or area organizers are encouraged to think about STEMs (space, time, energy, and money). Kathi shows easily how to do this for example in the living room:

Space: DVD's need to have their own space where they can be viewed easily and put back easily. (that's after they've been sorted and vid's probably won't ever watch again are given away!)
Time: A large basket for remotes put in a specific area will save all that time that goes to trying to find the remote every time someone wants to watch TV.
Energy: Commercials are a good time to pick up the living room. Take back cups and throw away trash.
Money: Do you really watch all the channels you pay for with cable or satellite? What changes can you make to save money?

That's a fairly easy fix for some living room problems. This is just one of many organizational projects that are contained in The Get Organized Project. There are projects for your home, your family and your personal life. This book isn't just about organizing your stuff, it's about organizing your self! I can't recommend this one any more highly. It's a great idea and it's easy to follow! Get organized today and have more time for the important things in life... like reading! LOL

The Get Organized Project is available NOW from your favorite bookseller.

I'm giving this one 5 out of 5 apples from my book bag!

Why Use an Arizona Attorney Over a Document Preparer ...

Families preparing for the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) often look for the most affordable way of getting help. Many incorrectly believe that a document preparer is cheaper than an attorney. While we strongly agree that cost is an important factor to consider, there are many additional factors to think about when looking for assistance with the ALTCS program.

The Arizona Code of Judicial Administration ? 7-208 (A) defines a legal document preparer as ?an individual or business entity certified to prepare or provide legal documents, without the supervision of an attorney, for an entity or a member of the public who is engaging in self representation in any legal matter.? A certified legal document preparer is authorized to:

a. Prepare or provide legal documents, without the supervision of an attorney, for an entity or a member of the public in any legal matter when that entity or person is not represented by an attorney;

b. Provide general legal information, but may not provide any kind of specific advice, opinion, or recommendation to a consumer about possible legal rights, remedies, defenses, options, or strategies;

c. Provide general factual information pertaining to legal rights, procedures, or options available to a person in a legal matter when that person is not represented by an attorney;

d. Make legal forms and documents available to a person who is not represented by an attorney; and

e. File and arrange for service of legal forms and documents for a person in a legal matter when that person is not represented by an attorney.

In most cases, individuals navigating the ALTCS process require more than what a document preparer can offer. This process demands more than filling in the blanks and providing the state with documentation. Consider the following:

? Applicants can minimize periods of ineligibility by understanding transfer rules.

? Community spouses can protect their assets with legal planning techniques.

? Well spouses can create a plan for the event that they pass away before the applicant.

A document preparer might fill a need for an individual who needs nothing more than filling out an application. But given that more than 73 percent of ALTCS applications are denied, there is little chance that any case can truly be classified as ?application only.?

A qualified Arizona elder law attorney understands ALTCS rules and regulations, and can coordinate those rules with other benefit programs that might be available. Of course, in addition to imparting this knowledge, elder law attorneys assist with all of the requisite legal documentation.

JacksonWhite feels strongly that a person should not have to pay an attorney to see if they need an attorney. We offer a free prescreen with one of our Arizona Elder Care Advisors to assist individuals understand their options and barriers to ATLCS eligibility. Only at that point, after issues are identified, would an individual need to decide whether to proceed with an attorney consultation. Individuals who move forward with representation then pay a flat fee for all work provided on an ALTCS case.

Don?t be misled by comparing costs between document preparers and attorneys; there is really very little difference. Document preparers often send clients to an attorney for any legal issues that arise during the process, so they end up paying for the document preparer AND an attorney. We suggest saving time, money, and a lot of stress by handling everything in one place.

For more information on ALTCS or to receive a free pre-screen with an Elder Care Advisor, please contact JacksonWhite Elder Law at 1-800-243-1160.

Intel sets sights on 5nm chip; already gearing up fabs for 14nm production

Ivy Bridge, Intel's first generation of chips to use the 22nm fabrication process, is hardly out of the gate, and yet talk has already turned to the company's next manufacturing technologies. According to Xbit Labs, which got its hands on some telltale slides, Paul Otellini et al. have the roadmap for 10nm, 7nm and 5nm processes locked down, and the company is preparing fabs in the states and Ireland to make chips using the 14nm fabrication method. Given that timeframe, Intel says 10nm chips will ship in 2015, with work on 5nm technology beginning that same year. While the slides in question look legit -- and that timeline matches previous reports -- we're not sure just when these mystery slides first made the rounds. Alas, we'll have a good few years to sort 5nm fact from fiction.

HP EliteBook 8460p

It starts with the lid latch. Where other business laptops offer a small, flimsy latch or, worse, make you scrabble with your fingernails at a nonexistent one, the HP EliteBook 8460p ($1,239 direct) has a big, burnished button that unlocks the securely latched lid. It's the first of your daily exposures to the 8460p's solid construction and classy design.

We don't say "solid construction" lightly?like other EliteBooks, the 8460p is a business-rugged system, built to withstand military tests for shock, vibration, dust, and heat. It's not as invulnerable as fully rugged systems such as the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 ($4,843 street, 3.5 stars) or Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct, 3.5 stars), but it's built to shrug off the scuffs and bumps of travel?along with inadvertent liquid spills, thanks to a spill-resistant keyboard and drain hole in the bottom.

Against that, its sturdy construction makes the 8460p a bit bulkier and heavier than other 14-inch laptops such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 ($899.99 direct, 4 stars) and Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and it lacks a couple of up-to-date features such as Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). But it's still a handsome, helpful business companion.

Design
Compared to the basic black of, say, Lenovo ThinkPads, the EliteBook 8460p is a stylish platinum-silver slab measuring 1.3 by 13.3 by 9.1 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.4 pounds, with an aluminum lid, palm rest, and encircling strip that contains the ports on a black magnesium alloy base. A DisplaySafe rubber frame protects the screen, which has a tiny LED next to the webcam to illuminate the non-backlit keyboard (well, part of the keyboard) in shadowy situations.

The matte-finish 14.0-inch display offers 1,366 by 768 resolution. Though not the brightest or highest in contrast that we've seen, it delivered good detail and color. Audio from the HP's twin speakers?both mounted left of center, one on the front edge and one on the bottom?was loud enough to fill a conference room, but sounded flat.

The slightly concave, island-style keys of the 8460p's keyboard provide a nicely firm typing feel. Except for HP's bizarre keyboard trademark?small up and down arrows sandwiched between full-sized left and right arrows?the layout is fine, with dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys and three buttons at top right that toggle Wi-Fi, audio mute, and browser launch. The last, when the computer is switched off, opens HP QuickWeb, which satisfies impatient surfers and e-mail checkers by bringing up a Web browser plus widgets such as weather and news headlines without booting Windows.

The glass-topped touchpad is first-rate, with smooth cursor motion, tapping, and gesture control and not-too-stiff, not-too-noisy mouse buttons below?and above, with the latter pair of buttons belonging to the pointing stick located at the intersection of the G, H, and B keys. The concave pointing stick isn't quite as successful as the touchpad (or Lenovo's TrackPoints), but should please users who want a choice of pointing devices.

Features
An old-school 56Kbps modem, along with VGA and Ethernet ports, decorates the EliteBook's back edge. On the right side of the chassis are microphone and headphone jacks, two USB 2.0 ports?one an eSATA/USB combo port, the other able to charge handheld devices?and a DisplayPort and Smart Card slot. On the left are two USB 3.0 ports, a FireWire port, SD/MMC and ExpressCard slots, and the DVD?RW drive.

A docking connector on the bottom completes the hardware connectivity roster, which lacks only HDMI. Similarly, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth check two of three boxes on the wireless shopping list, with Wireless Display, as mentioned, absent. With neither HDMI nor WiDi available, business travelers planning a big presentation with the 8460p had better rely on a VGA projector rather than an HDTV set.

IT managers will like the 8460p's Core i5 vPro processor and TPM security chip, but small and medium as well as large enterprises can benefit from the best part of the 320GB (7,200 rpm) hard drive's software preload: HP ProtectTools, a suite of utilities that steer you through security functions ranging from managing passwords to encrypting data and sanitizing (securely deleting) files. Other software found alongside Windows 7 Professional includes HP Power Assistant for managing power profiles, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a 60-day Norton Internet Security trial. HP stands behind the EliteBook with a three-year limited parts and labor warranty.

Performance
HP EliteBook 8460p The EliteBook 8460p features a 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M processor and 4GB of RAM. The combination won't set any speed records, but makes the HP a peppy performer for the productivity work for which it's designed.

HP EliteBook 8460p

Its PCMark 7 score of 2,065 is 200 to 300 points shy of slugging it out with the likes of the Lenovo U400 and Gateway ID47H07u, but its Handbrake video encoding and Photoshop CS5 image editing times of 1 minute 46 seconds and 3:56, respectively, are extremely competitive with other Core i5-based, 14-inch laptops, though they trail the Core i7-equipped Dell XPS 14z (1:37 and 3:27, respectively).

And though we'd be the last to suggest that a busy business traveler waste her time playing games, we must note that the Radeon HD 6470M graphics powered the HP to playable frame rates at 1,024 by 768 resolution in Crysis (38.3 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (31.3 fps). Our biggest disappointment in benchmark testing was that the 8460p balked at our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test, obliging us to fall back on our DVD simulation test of looping a two-hour MP4 video from the system's hard disk. The HP's removable 62Wh battery lasted 5 hours and 1 minute with screen brightness set at 50 percent.

Compared with the Editors' Choice pair of the Acer TravelMate 8481T-6440A and Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), the HP EliteBook 8460p is a little heavy and short on battery life. But even with the extra weight of its semi-rugged construction and the lack of those laptops' HDMI and WiDi, the EliteBook 8460p is a first-class business laptop. It's attractive, with a great typing and touchpadding experience, and built with security in mind.
