The Secret of Weight Loss May Be In 3,000-Year-Old Mummy Poop [Medicine]

Scientists may have found one of the keys to weight loss hiding in the poop of 3,000-year-old mummies. The bacterial DNA found in their guts is very different from our modern intestinal flora. More »

RIM sticking with consumer goods, just 'refocusing' on enterprise

RIM
Some people got the wrong idea yesterday when RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins said the company was refocusing on the enterprise market and would stop trying to be "all things to all people." Many took the post-earnings call comment to mean that RIM would be exiting the consumer market, an assumption that didn't seem like much of a stretch considering its failure to capture the imagination of users outside the office place. Things weren't made any better when Heins seemingly left the door open for the manufacturer to leave the hardware business entirely. However, in a statement, managing director of global sales and regional marketing Patrick Spence clarified that "the claim that RIM has said it will withdraw from the consumer market is wholly misleading." He continued to explain that, "whilst we announced plans to refocus our efforts on our core strengths, and on our enterprise customer base, we were very explicit that we will continue to build on our strengths to go after targeted consumer segments." In particular there still seems to be hope that BBM can become a staple in the lives of young trend setters, but it'll probably need some help from cross platform clients to do so.

Diabetes Share many of the Same Signs and Symptoms

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood glucose commonly called blood sugar. If the person has diabetes, it means that he has too much glucose in the blood although the reason may differ. There are two types of diabetes

Symptoms of diabetes-
Symptoms of diabetes may vary depending on how high the blood sugar is elevated. Those with pre diabetes or type 2 diabetes may not experience any symptoms in the initial stage. Whereas in type 1, symptoms tend to appear quickly and be more sever. Some of the signs and symptoms of both the types of diabetes may include:

o ?Increased thirst
o ?Frequent urination
o ?Extreme hunger
o ?Unexplained weight loss
o ?Presence of ketones in the urine
o ?Fatigue
o ?Blurred vision
o ?Slow-healing sores
o ?Mild high blood pressure
o ?Frequent infections, such as gum or skin infections and bladder infections

Type 1 diabetes can develop typically appears during childhood or adolescence however type 2 diabetes can develop at any age and is often preventable.

Causes of diabetes-

The cause of diabetes can be understood after understanding how glucose is normally processed in the body.

How glucose normally works

Glucose is the main source of energy in the body that makes up the muscles.

It comes from two major sources, the food we eat and the liver. During digestion sugar is absorbed into the blood. Sugar then enters the cells with the help of insulin

As the insulin circulates, it acts like a key unlocking the doors to allow sugar into the cells.

Insulin helps in lowering the amount of sugar in the blood. As the sugar levels in the blood drops, so does the secretion of insulin from the pancreas.
o ?Causes of type 1 diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves the body with little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Type 1 is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, though exactly what those factors are is still unclear.

o ?Causes of pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes
In type 2 diabetes the cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Instead of moving into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. The reason behind this is uncertain, although as in type 1 diabetes, it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of type 2. The development of type 2 diabetes is linked to being over weight, but not everyone with type 2 is overweight.

o ?Causes of gestational diabetes
At the time of pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones to sustain pregnancy. These hormones make the cells more resistant to insulin. As the placenta grows larger in the second and third trimesters, it secretes more of these hormones which make it even harder for insulin to do its job.

Retail Internet Business Ideas - Grace Jessica's blog

The Internet business, retail or otherwise, is much like any other brick and mortar business. It requires a saleable product and service, relevant communication to attract customers, and the backend logistics to deliver the goods. Some people still consider the World Wide Web as an easy maze that will lead them to a `pot of gold'. Let's discuss some key considerations for building a successful retail Internet business.

Are bees threatened by insecticide use? New studies say yes. (+video)

Scientists found that one class of insecticides may harm both bumblebees and honeybees in two recent studies. Bees' important role as pollinators may be threatened.?

Scientists have discovered ways in which even low doses of widely used pesticides can harm bumblebees and honeybees, interfering with their homing abilities and making them lose their way.

Skip to next paragraph In this video, Dr. Jan Knodel, NDSU Extension Entomologist, discusses how to protect honeybees and native pollinators from pesticide poisoning. Pollinators are a vital part of our agricultural food production and should be protected from pesticide poisoning.
Special thanks to beekeeper Todd Weinmann.

In two studies published in the journal Science on Thursday, British and French researchers looked at bees and neonicotinoid insecticides - a class introduced in the 1990s now among the most commonly used crop pesticides in the world.

In recent years, bee populations have been dropping rapidly, partly due to a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder. Scientists also fear pesticides are destroying bee populations, but it is not clear how they are causing damage.

Dave Goulson of Stirling University in Scotland, who led the British study, said some bumblebee species have declined hugely.

"In North America, several bumblebee species which used to be common have more or less disappeared from the entire continent," while in Britain, three species have become extinct, he said in a statement.

The threat to bee populations also extends to Asia, South America and the Middle East, experts say.

Bees are important pollinators of flowering plants, including many fruit and vegetable crops. A 2011 United Nations report estimated that bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles or birds do work worth 153 billion euros ($203 bln) a year to the human economy.

In the first of the Science studies, a University of Stirling team exposed developing colonies of bumblebees to low levels of a neonicotinoid called imidacloprid, and then placed the colonies in an enclosed field site where the bees could fly around collecting pollen under natural conditions for six weeks.

At the beginning and end of the experiment, the researchers weighed each of the bumblebee nests - which included the bees, wax, honey, bee grubs and pollen - to see how much the colony had grown.

Compared to control colonies not exposed to imidacloprid, the researchers found the treated colonies gained less weight, suggesting less food was coming in.

The treated colonies were on average eight to 12 percent smaller than the control colonies at the end of the experiment, and also produced about 85 percent fewer queens - a finding that is key because queens produce the next generation of bees.

In the separate study, a team led by Mickael Henry of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Avignon tagged free-ranging honeybees with tiny radio-frequency identification microchips glued to each bee's back. This allowed them to track the bees as they came and went from hives.

The researchers gave some of the bees a low dose of the neonicotinoid pesticide thiamethoxam which they knew would not kill them and compared them to a control group of bees that was not exposed to the pesticide.

The treated bees were about two to three times more likely to die while away from their nests, and the researchers said this was probably because the pesticide interfered with the bees' homing systems, so they couldn't find their way home.

Henry said the findings raised important issues about pesticide authorisation procedures.

"So far, they (the procedures) mostly require manufacturers to ensure that doses encountered on the field do not kill bees, but they basically ignore the consequences of doses that do not kill them but may cause behavioral difficulties," he said in a statement. The Serendipity Workout & BONUS Abs & Core Sculpt Cool Down

Hi Bodyrockers,

Freddy here. I wanted to share this very touching story that BodyRocker David sent me after reading my post of March 13th where I opened up to you guys about how my marriage ended. It just goes to show that many of us share similar challenges and experiences, and if we keep positive and support each other through the tough times life often delivers ?happy accidents? that brings the love and joy back into our lives when we least expect it.

David writes:

Hi Freddy,

I wanted to thank-you personally for opening-up and sharing your story with the Bodyrock community. Our stories are eerily similar? My wife also left me in late August after being married for 16 years (with 2 children 8 year old girl and 6 year old boy) and I have just recently learned that she was unfaithful to me, I had my suspicions but didn?t want to believe it. As you can relate, this entire experience was very devastating to me. I completely turned inward and was just focussed on taking care of the kids and not myself. I went into a downward spiral of working out far too much and not eating enough to maintain the regiment resulting in losing 35 lbs in a matter of 3 months. I hit rock bottom in November and my trainer was very worried about me so we started a food diary and a brand new workout program. I had forgotten what some of the exercises were so while I was Googling them I stumbled across your totally amazing website. I can honestly say that accidentally finding your site was one of the best things that ever happened to me. So I say from the bottom of my heart thank-you for keeping the site going while you were going through this very overwhelming time of your life. Bodyrock has become a very big part of my family. The kids know who Sean and Lisa-Marie are and ask who?s workout I am doing on any given day ? my son Matthew even has a crush on Lisa-Marie, he always come running to the computer when he hears her voice :) That is not where the similarity ends, about a month ago I went to see a new counselor and I had mentioned finding your site and a few more instances of things just happening without me looking for them. She told me about?Serendipity?(a ?happy accident? the accident of finding something good ?without looking for it) and then 2 days later my version of your Lisa-Marie fell into my life. I was not looking or even planning on looking for anyone, this just happened completely out of the blue.? I am so happy that you were able to have someone like Lisa-Marie drop into your life without searching for it.? Well enough rambling for now. Please keep up the great work and keep the smile on your face.

All the best,

David

I know that many of you out there are struggling your way through broken relationships and I also know that there are days when you are just trying to keep functioning and hold your head above the water. There are many phases of the recovery process and each of us takes these lessons at our own pace. What they all have in common tho is that eventually you have to start working your way towards forgiveness because no matter what slight, deception or betrayal you may have suffered, once you drag yourself out of the emotional currents, forgiveness is really the only shore where you can rest and find renewal. You can?t stand for the things you want in life if you are treading water. Sometimes as with David?s serendipity and my relationship with Lisa, life sends a life guard in after you and you wake up on a white sand beach with the sun on your face :)

Best,

It might be ?snowing microbes? on one of Saturn?s moons

Is there life beneath the icy surface of Enceladus? (AP/NASA)

A NASA scientist says there's a good chance of finding extraterrestrial life inhabiting one of Saturn's tiny orbiting moons.

"More than 90 jets of all sizes near Enceladus's south pole are spraying water vapor, icy particles, and organic compounds all over the place," says Carolyn Porco, an award-winning planetary scientist and leader of the Imaging Science team for NASA's Cassini spacecraft. "Cassini has flown several times now through this spray and has tasted it. And we have found that aside from water and organic material, there is salt in the icy particles. The salinity is the same as that of Earth's oceans."

NASA says the watery jets are erupting through icy cracks in a "vast underground sea" on this moon's surface. And the sea may be home to microbes similar to those found in some of the deepest parts of our own planet's oceans. While there is no direct sunlight reaching beneath the surface, Saturn's own orbit may be creating enough heat beneath the surface of Enceladus to helped create the tiny life-forms.

When filmmaker James Cameron returned from his historic voyage to the bottom of the Mariana Trench this week, he said the virtually unexplored depths reminded him of an isolated lunar landscape.

But since the watery jets of Enceladus are spewing with enough velocity to reach into outer space, astronauts may not even need to make a heralding voyage to Enceladus, or beneath its icy surface.

"It's erupting out into space where we can sample it. It sounds crazy but it could be snowing microbes on the surface of this little world," Porco said. "In the end, it is the most promising place I know of for an astrobiology search. We don't even need to go scratching around on the surface. We can fly through the plume and sample it."

How To Sell A House | Dallas Real Estate

Moving faster than the speed of light! Traveling back in time! Escaping from a black hole! Selling your house in 2012?!

Not all of those things are impossible, we promise! If you?re itching to move out of your house this year, here are some things to do when selling your house:

  1. Clean your house.
  2. The first things to do when selling your house is to clean up. Cleaning up your house and removing clutter makes your house look more attractive and spacious. Hire professional cleaners if you?re strapped for time. Clean your carpets. Polish wood floors. Consider repainting. The time and money you spend cleaning your house will be paid back to you when you sell your house.

  3. Hire a real estate agent.
  4. You don?t technically need to hire a Park Cities real estate agent , but about 90% of homeowners do. Knowing how to sell a house is a complicated task even when the housing market isn?t the punchline of half the jokes on TV, so having an experienced real estate agent on your side can certainly help you tip the scales in your favor these days. A good agent knows how to sell a house and will explain how they will get yours sold.

When interviewing real estate agents, you want to look for someone who is familiar with your area, can explain how they would market your home, charges reasonable fees, and is just plain someone you feel comfortable with. You?re going to be working with this agent closely, so don?t rush this step because you?re desperate to sell your house. You can also use the same agent to buy your next home.

  5. Have your home professionally inspected.
  6. It?s normal for real estate contracts to give buyers the right to inspect your property, so have it done yourself first. That way, you?ll know which repairs you need to make and which problems you need to disclose. A buyer will find out either way, so it is best to know in advance and make necessary repairs or price your house accordingly. A good inspector can show you how to sell a house for more money by making some basic repairs.

From this point on, a qualified real estate agent should be able to guide you through the rest of the house selling process. They can?t do everything for you, but a good Keller Williams Park Cities real estate agent will support you and guide you on how to sell a house at every step.

I hope this article has helped make the idea of selling your home a little less scary and given you a few ideas on how to sell a house in this market. People are still buying houses, honestly. If you would like some assistance and personalized advice on how to sell a house in Park Cities , please Contact me .

Staging Diva Shares 5 Top Tips To Get Your House Ready To Sell ...

GUEST POST BY DEBRA GOULD, THE STAGING DIVA?

Home stagers can make a number of small changes to a property that can dramatically shorten the time it spends on the real estate market while also increasing the final sales price. Home staging expert Debra Gould, also known as?The Staging Diva, shares 5 top tips for getting a house ready to sell:

1. Make sure that showing appointment isn?t just a drive-by

Just because there?s a showing booked on your home doesn?t mean the potential buyer will actually go inside. Imagine you?re a home buyer and your real estate agent has 10 houses to show you today. When you drive up to what could be your dream home, you see a broken railing and children?s toys strewn across a weed-filled lawn. You don?t have any time to waste, so you?re probably going to say, ?Let?s move on,? skipping the showing appointment entirely.

Curb appeal not only attracts potential buyers who happen to be driving by, it also helps draw prospective buyers into your home once they already have a showing appointment booked with their agent. When a property looks unkempt, it scares off potential buyers (unless they?re looking for a tear-down at a rock bottom price). To enhance curb appeal:

??? ?Cut the lawn and ensure fallen leaves and weeds are removed. Keep walkways and driveways freshly swept.

??? ?Add planted urns or hanging plants to the entrance area.

??? ?Repair or replace any obvious defects to the front door/hardware, mailboxes, railings, address sign or lights.

??? ?Move garbage and recycling containers from the front of the house or tuck them neatly in a garage or shed.

??? ?Pressure wash the exterior and decks. If necessary touch-up up paint.

2. Stash your keepsakes and keep your home clutter-free

De-cluttering is essential, especially when you remember that many people move because they feel too crowded in their current homes. Your treasured collection of decorative plates, figurines or stuffed animals will look like clutter to most potential buyers. ?Tackle one area at a time so de-cluttering isn?t so overwhelming.

You?ll probably have to go through each closet more than once to get its contents down to the absolute essentials, but it?s worth the effort. Try setting a timer for 60 minutes and it will no longer seem like an endless task. Consider that any time you spend now on this task will make packing and moving that much easier.

Rent a storage locker so you can keep your beloved items while you?re selling the house, and then have them delivered to your new address after your move.

3. Avoid scaring buyers away with a To Do list

You don?t want potential buyers focusing on one flaw after another during a showing.?No one wants a list of projects or problems to deal with when they?re buying a home.?You want them to fall in love with your home and imagine themselves living there not thinking about how much less they should offer you because of everything they?ll have to do.

Try to be very objective and do a walk through to spot problems. You might want to ask a highly critical friend or relative to do this for you because when you live somewhere too long you become blind to the problems.

Look for chipped paint on the door frames or scuffs on walls that need touch ups. Glue down any peeling wallpaper.

Ensure all electrical outlets and light switches have un-cracked covers. Repair or replace broken tiles, dripping taps and moldy caulking. These little things make a big difference in the buyer?s mind!

4. Color is your friend when it?s time to sell a house

White walls often look cold and sterile, unless you warm the room up with accent colors and patterns. If you have to repaint a home?s interior or some rooms in a home, choose a pleasing color palette that allows each room to flow nicely into the next. All colors should go together.

Try to repeat one signature color throughout a home. A feature color in one room can be repeated as an accent in the others, through vases, artwork, throws or decorative pillows.

Bring life to a neutral decor with cut flowers or a potted orchid for example.

5. Make a big impact with a little art

By strategically using art, you can enhance a home?s perceived value, draw the eye away from tiny flaws, give an otherwise uninteresting space a focal point and replace personal memorabilia.

Don?t just hang something on the wall where an old picture hook happens to be. Position art so that the center is 60? up from the floor. Make sure the size of the piece is appropriate to the size of the wall. Art with a large frame on a small wall can make the entire area seem smaller. Avoid religious art or anything edgy that might offend potential buyers.

These are just a few of the many things that can be done to improve your home?s appearance and to make it more appealing to home buyers. While the steps can be time consuming, the results are worth it.

A?professional home stager?makes the job much easier and can give you the specific steps you should take on your own. Stagers bring total objectivity and a creative eye to the process of decorating your house to sell. This increases your chance of selling your property faster and for more money.

Logitech UE Air Speaker brings AirPlay streaming in April for $400

The AirPlay market doesn't seem to be shrinking anytime soon, giving Logitech ample opportunity to tread on ground already marked by the likes of JBL and Klipsch. This morning, the outfit's introducing the Logitech UE Air Speaker with AirPlay technology, enabling uncompressed audio streams to flow from one's iTunes library, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch right to the home stereo. You'll need both the boombox and your AirPlay source connected to the same WiFi network, after which you can pipe sine waves to its pair of tweeters and woofers. Users will need to download the (gratis) Logitech UE Air app for setup, which will be infinitely more useful when the speaker itself starts to ship to Europe and the US this April for $399.99.

Leah Minnick retires after 35 years | The Seminole Tribune

By Rachel Buxton

BRIGHTON ? After 35 years of dedicated work with the Seminole Tribe, Brighton?s Director of Elder Services Leah Minnick retired on Feb. 24.

Family, friends and community members came together to honor and congratulate Minnick during a retirement party held at the Senior Center on March 1.

?I didn?t want nothing,? Minnick said. ?I told them I just want to walk out that door quietly.?

However, her staff and her elders were not going to let that happen.

Minnick began working for the Seminole Tribe and the department, called Hot Meals at the time, on Nov. 17, 1976.

?I had been working outside in Okeechobee, raising my kids there, and somebody told me there was a job open if I wanted to come work for the Tribe,? she said. ?It was with the clinic. So I applied for it.?

She traveled all the way to Hollywood to interview for the position. Although she didn?t land the position she originally wanted, as she was leaving her interview, then director of Hot Meals Lottie Herald chased her down and offered her a job on the spot as an assistant cook for Hot Meals.

?She came running after me when I was fixing to leave and said, ?Leah, I was hoping they wouldn?t give you the job because I got a job for you at the Hot Meals and, if you want it, you can start right away.? I said OK, and I?ve been there ever since,? Minnick said.

After four years of promotions within the department, Minnick became the director.

She said at that time, Hot Meals mainly fed the elders. During her 35 years, she slowly added programs and events to the department.

?Time changed, things changed,? she said.

As director, Minnick organized trips, bowling and horseshoe tournaments, holiday parties and anything else that added fun and adventure to the Department of Elder Services.

Minnick loved making it possible for the elders to experience things off the reservation and to see things they didn?t know existed. Minnick said their trip to Alaska stands out above the others.

?That was the best trip ever,? she said. ?Happy Jones went on that trip to Alaska and just couldn?t get over some of the things she saw.?

Time quickly passed, and, before Minnick knew it, she had spent her entire career at the Department of Elder Services.

?It got to the point where my oldest daughter said, ?Mom, when are you going to retire? I don?t want to come in there when you?re still the director,?? Minnick laughed. ?She turns 55 in August, so I got out just in time.?

Minnick said she?s going to miss her staff and planning activities, but she?s looking forward to just being a senior. Thanks to Minnick?s hard work and persistence in getting the new Senior Center in Brighton, she will get to fully enjoy it.

She admitted that she?s still adjusting to retirement, but she has plenty to keep her busy, including straightening up her house and taking care of her cows.

Minnick also plans to take up sewing. Her mother was a seamstress and said she never learned to sew because she was busy working and raising her kids. Now that she will have the time, she would like to finally learn.

?It?s never too late,? she said.

While Minnick never thought she would spend her entire career in one place, she said things happen for a reason and that she must have been meant for the Senior Center.

She only has one regret.

?I should have kept a journal because I could have wrote a book?it would have been funny,? Minnick laughed. ?I had a lot of fun.?

The farther the better for corals after oil spill

Deepwater organisms may be slow to recover from Gulf accident

Web edition : Monday, March 26th, 2012

Deepwater corals didn?t escape the ecological damage of the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. How much they were hurt depended on how close to the spill?s source they were.

Six months after the spill, marine scientists sent deep-diving submersibles down 290 to 2,600 meters to check out the damage at the bottom of the Gulf. At several sites more than 20 kilometers away from the ruptured wellhead, deepwater corals such as Paramuricea apparently continued to thrive. But just 11 kilometers from the spill, similar corals had lost tissue and were covered in places with a brown flocculent material.

Chemical analysis of that ?floc? linked it to the chemical composition of oil spewing from the wellhead, suggesting the material in some way forms after exposure to oil. Because deepwater corals live so long and grow at a biologically glacial pace, it could be years before the full effect of the oil spill on deepwater corals is known, scientists say.

Helen White, a geochemist at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and her colleagues report the finding online the week of March 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Entrepreneurial Articles: Customer Service-

Customer Service - A Study in Contrasts

March 22, 2012
By Jerry Osteryoung

"There is a spiritual aspect to our lives - when we give, we receive - when a business does something good for somebody, that somebody feels good about them!" ~ Ben Cohen, Ben & Jerry's

Some businesses really get the importance of customer service and others just do not. In many cases, those that do not get it compete on price alone, knowing that price is all their customers really want. However, this type of business strategy does nothing to ensure loyalty or repeat business. In my opinion, business owners who do not provide great customer service either do not see its value, do not have the funds to support it or are simply missing its profit potential.

Two of my recent encounters with businesses demonstrate the polar extremes of customer service. On one end of the spectrum is a restaurant I visited in Hollywood, Florida. I was in Hollywood to deliver a speech, and some clients and I went to this restaurant when we broke for lunch.

When we walked into the restaurant, there was no one in the entire place - no customers, not even staff! After waiting for a short while - not really sure why we waited at all - an elderly man came out, walked up to the table and said, "What do you want!"

The greeting - if you can call it that - was completely devoid of any welcome or friendliness, and the lunch service got worse from there. We had to ask for menus, silverware and salt. I even had to walk into the back of the restaurant to find him and ask for our check, which he delivered five minutes later.

The quality of service at this restaurant was so bad that, if I had not experienced it myself, I probably would not believe it possible. Needless to say, we will not be going back to this restaurant. Ever.

I just can not imagine why anyone would allow a business to be operated like this unless it was an anomaly. But in the case of this restaurant, it was not just an off day. After talking with some other folks who had been there before - something I probably should have done first - I discovered this horrible customer service is standard for that place.

In stark contrast, my experiences at So Pure Salon in Tallahassee are always amazing, from the moment I walk in to the moment I walk out.

When I walk into the salon, I am always immediately greeted with a warm smile and offered something to drink. My stylist, Christine, is excellent. She goes out of her way to make me feel special, whether it is by giving me a short scalp massage while washing my hair or being sincerely concerned that I am happy with my hair.

When she is finished with my hair, she walks me to the front desk - these little gestures make such a difference - where she gets them to schedule my next appointment. Three days before the appointment, they always text and call to remind me.

Another special thing about Christine is that whenever I talk to her about her customers, she never refers to them as "customers" but calls them "guests" and is always very respectful.

These extra special touches permeate the entire experience at this salon. For example, when I buy hair products, the cashier/greeter rings me up and puts the product(s) in a bag, but instead of handing me the package over the counter, she walks around the counter to hand me the bag. It is such a nice touch.

Given these accounts, it should not surprise you that So Pure Salon just doubled in size and the restaurant will not likely last another year.

While these two examples are extremes, they clearly illustrate how a business that puts tremendous emphasis on customer service flourishes and one that does not languishes.

Now go out and make sure that customer service is always at the top of your mind. Your business will be much more successful if you do.

You can do this!

An extinct species of scops owl has been discovered in Madeira

Friday, March 23, 2012

An international team of scientists, including some from Majorca and the Canary Islands, have described a new type of fossil scops owl, the first extinct bird on the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). Otus mauli, which was also the first nocturnal bird of prey described in the area, lived on land and became extinct as a result of humans arriving on the island.

Twenty years ago, the German researcher Harald Pieper discovered fossil remains of a small nocturnal bird of prey in Madeira, which, until now, had not been studied in depth. The international team of palaeontologists has shown that the remains belong to a previously unknown extinct species of scops owl, which they have called Otus mauli.

"It has long legs and wings slightly shorter than the continental European scops owl from which it derives" Josep Antoni Alcover, one of the authors of the study and researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a mixed centre of the university of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The result of the analysis of the proportions of the remains found, which has been published in the journal Zootaxa, reveals that Otus mauli could be a land inhabiting species that ate invertebrates and "occasionally lizards or birds".

"It is likely that their extinction is linked to the arrival of humans and the fauna they brought with them", Alcover explains. He also points out that their disappearance formed part of a pattern of extinction of the island's species, which occurred in virtually all the islands of the world.

According to researchers, amongst the causes of extinction of this scops owl, the destruction of its habitat is highlighted, as Madeira had a lot of serious fires during the seven years that followed the Portuguese arrival. Furthermore, humans brought new birds with diseases that were unfamiliar to the native species, as well as rats and mice that could prey on eggs of animals that had nests close to the ground.

Exclusive to Madeira?

The same or a similar species has been investigated in Porto Santo, another island of the archipelago of Madeira. "This is extremely interesting" the researcher says, "but difficult to assess because the materials found are limited and fragmented".

"If the scops owls of Madeira and Porto Santo were different species, it would mean that the Otus' flying ability is much more limited than continental scops owls. The distance between the two islands would be enough to isolate them" Alcover points out.

The homogeneity of the scops owls' measurements on the two islands, as well as the differences compared to European scops owls suggests that they were genetically isolated from the European populations. The distance between the continent and the island was enough to explain the difference in the species.

On this island they expect to discover new species of birds in the near future "which will report a world that disappeared just a few hundred years ago". "The same thing will happen in the Azores islands where there is already evidence that a scops owl different to the ones in Madeira and Europe that is also extinct" the scientist says.

I would liiiiiike an elven woman. :D Beast with a rapier on the outside, fairly batshit on the inside and when no one's looking. She's sorta based on the combination of two characters in Drakengarde series (awful game, decent concepts).
She has a... thing with children and the child-like.

Ah, further thoughts I ought to have mentioned---she doesn't have to be ONE WITH THE FORESTS GRR HUMANS GET OUT etc, etc.
I rather fancy the idea of having elves integrated into human/etc society, in the cities and whatnot. She seems the city girl.

And yay for non-generic forest elves! No one loves a hippie. </3
